i am really inspired by the work that you are doing and a ’cause’ which will benefit our future generations.

The only way to turn these kinds of ideas around is to provide other options. Fake furs are often as beautiful as the originals. Why not! What a way to keep these beautiful cats from dying for man’s vanity.

I truly hope and pray that this project is a success. Leopards are some of the most beautiful big cats in the world and truly need protection. Maybe Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell would like to help out on this project. Anytime fur is shown on models in the fashion industry, animals take a hit big time. Maybe some of the designers who are making millions upon millions would like to step in with some $ to help stem the tide of wiping out these magnificent creatures as well.

I hope his plan succeeds beyond his wildest dreams. Eventually it may replace the animal skins completely fashion is a very funny thing. Best of luck to you Mr. Dickerson.

  1. great post, thanks for sharing

  2. Through our foundation we already support the MunYaWana leopard project by adopting leopard Timbo. We’ve seen him and other leopards during our visits to South Africa. Such beautiful creatures. We want to contribute to this specific project in order to prevent Timbo (and others) ending as a robe for a Shembe priest.
We dearly hope the project will succeed.

The beauty, allure and mystical symbolism of leopard fur is something that no one can deny. I wrote my master’s thesis on leopard (real fur, fake fur, and prints) in fashion history, and I have concluded that it is an ancient and universal desire (which cuts across many cultures) to wear the striking pelts of this magnificent and endangered cat. Whether you are part of the “fashion tribe” or the Shembe ritual, there is hope for environmental education and excellent, realistic-looking, affordable alternatives to leopard fur. “To Skin A Cat” is a perfect example of the type of awareness that needs to be raised in our modern and quickly changing world. I am so glad I found out about the filmmaker’s and naturalist’s joint mission to make this documentary–it is admirable work that will undoubtedly have tremendous impact. As I work on turning my thesis into a book, I know I will have much to say on this topic. I have made a financial donation, but would be willing to work in other ways to make a contribution–at the very least I have some ideas about alternative fake furs. I hope that it will become a badge of pride for the Zulu people to wear a facsimile as they help to conserve the powerful creatures they revere. Thank you for your efforts. I am very proud of you all.

"I wish you every success in your campaign to save the leopard from extinction and admire the way you are going about it. With the right approach that you are showing, success for both the leopard and the Shembe people/church will come." - Carmen Calleja
